What’s the difference between a supplier and a utility?

Whether you are looking for electricity, natural gas, green energy or solar power options, we can point you in the right direction. But first, it’s essential to know the difference between your energy supplier and your utility.

Suppliers: Also called providers, retail energy providers (REPs), or energy service companies (ESCOs). You may see various terms to describe an energy supplier depending on if you live in Texas or another state. Suppliers sell you the energy needed to power your home or business. By buying wholesale energy, suppliers can often offer customers lower rates than local utilities.
Utilities: Utilities deliver and maintain your home or business’s energy – regardless of whether you’ve bought a plan from a deregulated supplier. Have an outage or other power emergency? Call your utility – not your supplier.

4Change Energy energy plans

4Change Energy has a vast selection of plans to cater to all types of energy consumers. Here are some of the most popular 4Change Energy plans — all of which can be found on the Choose Energy marketplace.

Maxx Saver Select

The Maxx Saver Select 12 and Maxx Saver Select 24 are fixed-rate plans with 12-month and 24-month contracts, respectively. With these plans, you can receive a $100 bill credit whenever you use more than 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity in a month. Each one comes with 6% power from renewable sources — unless you upgrade to the company’s green energy option, which includes 100% renewable energy.

Free Energy 12

This is another fixed-rate, 12-month plan with 6% renewable energy. Under this plan, you’ll pay for usage up to 500 kWh at your normal rate, but anything you use between 501 kWh and 1,000 kWh is free. Any electricity over 1,000 kWh will be billed at your normal rate, but you’ll get a $25 bill credit.

Helpful Saver 24

With the Helpful Saver 24, you’ll get a fixed electricity rate for 24 months. When you use 1,000 kWh in a month, you’ll earn a $35 bill credit. And if you hit 2,000 kWh, you’ll receive an additional $35 credit. Like the other plans featured here, it includes 6% renewable energy, with the option of 100% renewable energy.

Maxx Saver Bundled 12

4Change Energy’s Maxx Saver Bundled 12 is a fixed-rate plan with a year-long contract. If you exceed 1,000 kWh in a month, you’ll get a $100 bill credit. In line with the other plans, the Maxx Saver Bundled 12 has 6% energy from renewable sources, but it can be upgraded to 100% for a small monthly fee.
4Change Energy reviews

Overall Score
    3.6/5
Customer Service
    2.5/5
Online Accessibility
    3.3/5
Business History
    5/5

We’ve broken down our scoring model into three main categories:

    Customer service
    Online accessibility
    Business history

Using these criteria, Choose Energy assigns impartial reviews to top electricity providers in Texas. To learn more about electric provider reviews, see our full list here.
Customer service: 2.5/5

    P2C Complaint score: 0
    Satisfaction guarantee: 5

The state’s official Power To Choose website gave 4Change Energy a 1 out of 5 for its most recent P2C complaint scorecard, which can be found here. This brought the company’s customer service score down, though it does offer a 30-day satisfaction guarantee.
Online accessibility: 3.3/5

    Online bill pay: 5
    Online chat: 0
Access to usage alerts & trends: 5

Online accessibility was ranked on a yes or no basis for all three categories. 4Change Energy offers online bill pay and usage alerts but lacks an online chat. That missing factor dropped the company’s category score down.
Business history: 5/5

    Years in business: 5
    Better Business Bureau accreditation: 5

4Change Energy was founded in 2012 though its parent company has been around longer and has been BBB accredited since its inception. It also boasts an A+ BBB rating. Though the BBB is a paid accreditation, we have included it here to measure each provider’s interest in its public image.

4Change Energy main energy services

4Change Energy is one of the best electric companies in Texas and one of the most popular providers on our marketplace. At Choose Energy, we’re highly selective about which providers we feature on our site, ensuring that we only work with trusted energy providers.

When it comes to choosing providers for our marketplace, we consider:

    Dependable service
    Breadth of plans
    Budget-friendly rates
    Customer satisfaction

4Change Energy earns high marks in each of these categories. Below, we’ve included a short summary of the main energy services that the company offers.
4Change Energy for residential customers

4Change Energy specializes in affordable energy plans for Texans, offering both fixed and variable-rate plans for residents. You can choose from several term lengths, including month-to-month, six-month, and multi-year plans. Each of the residential 4Change Energy plans includes a 30-day satisfaction guarantee.
4Change Energy for business customers

4Change Energy doesn’t offer business electricity plans. If you’re a business owner in a deregulated area, Choose Energy can match you with the right commercial energy plan for your needs. Learn more about commercial energy plans and request a customized quote for your business.
Green energy options with 4Change Energy

Texas is a leading producer of wind and solar energy, so it makes sense that 4Change Energy offers its customers the ability to go green with a renewable electricity plan. You can upgrade your current 4Change Energy plan to a green plan for $6.95 per month.
No deposit options from 4Change Energy

Like most other providers, 4Change Energy runs a credit check when you apply for a new plan. If you have a satisfactory credit score, the company will waive the deposit. Otherwise, you’ll need to pay a deposit before beginning service. If you’d rather not pay a deposit, look for a provider that offers no-deposit plans, such as prepaid plans.
Other 4Change Energy initiatives

If you’re a 4Change Energy customer and refer a friend or family to enroll, you’ll each receive a $25 Visa gift card through the 4Friends Referrals program.
Community investment

4Change Energy is widely recognized for its contributions to charitable causes. In fact, 4% of the company’s annual profits are donated to four causes: the American Cancer Society, Heroes for Children, the American Red Cross, and Feeding Texas.
Moving or transferring service with 4Change Energy

If you’re moving and want to keep your 4Change Energy plan, call the company and provide them with your new home address. On the other hand, if you’re moving and want to switch providers, you can use the Choose Energy marketplace to find a new plan. You won’t have to pay an early termination fee as long as you can provide your new address.
Types of rates offered by 4Change Energy

As you’re browsing 4Change Energy electricity rates, you may encounter two types of plans: fixed-rate and variable-rate. Here’s the difference between the two:

Fixed-rate plans. When you sign a fixed-rate plan contract, you’ll agree to pay a certain rate for the duration of your plan term, regardless of price fluctuations in the energy market. These plans offer more predictability for your monthly energy costs.
Variable-rate plans. These types of plans don’t come with a fixed electricity rate, so your energy costs will vary depending on market fluctuations. Variable-rate plans offer more flexibility since they do not include a contract, but they can be risky since your rates can increase when energy demand is high.

Choose Energy's tips for electricity service set-up

Before purchasing a new plan, read the Electricity Facts Label (EFL). Every plan’s EFL includes:

Your electricity rate (priced per kWh used)
The percentage of power from renewable sources
Fees for terminating your contract early

Easy sign-up process. When you buy a new plan from 4Change Energy, there’s no need to notify your utility about the switch. 4Change Energy will oversee the transfer process, with no interruptions to your service.

Understand your bill. Your electricity bill will include charges from 4Change Energy (your provider) and your local utility (determined by where you live). In addition to distributing electricity to your home, your utility is also tasked with restoring power during outages and maintaining power lines.
